Firms link in Rotterdam project
Four companies - L'Air Liquide (AL), ICI, Arco Chemical, and the GEB Rotterdam power utility - will invest roughly Dfl 200 million ($113 million) in a cogeneration project at Rotterdam. The partners have established a new company, Eurogen, to manage the investment. The steam and electricity generation plant, scheduled for startup before the end of 1994, will be built adjacent to ICI Holland's Rozenburg complex and will be operated by AL. A steam pipe will link the unit to Arco. AL and GEB will own more than 40% each of Eurogen, with the two chemical partners taking equal shares in the balance of the company. The Dutch government is providing a Dfl 20-million subsidy for the project, and the rest of the financing will come from investor funds and banks. Arco and ICI will obtain existing and future steam and electricity requirements from Eurogen, while GEB will purchase the remaining electricity for its operations. The plant will replace a number of existing steam generators in the area and will result in a more energy-efficient, less-polluting operation, says AL. The project marks AL's first big venture in the industry-intensive Rotterdam area, and it hopes to build up its industrial gases activities there on the back of the agreement. AL says it will explore oppotunities for similar projects on its own sites elsewhere in Europe; such ventures are particularly variable in countries where electricity rates are relatively high such as Italy and Spain.
