Diesel aromatics difficult to reduce

Journal Article · · Oil Gas J.; (United States)

Very few existing distillate hydrotreaters can successfully treat typical refinery diesel blend stocks to meet the recently proposed limit in total aromatics content in highway diesel fuel. Although most existing units are capable of treating these stocks to 0.05 wt % sulfur, throughput may have to be reduced. In addition to a limit of 0.05 wt % sulfur, the Environmental Protection Agency's proposed rules also limit total aromatics content to 20 vol % (OGJ, Mar. 30, p. 56). The increasing conversion of heavy oils is producing distillate blending components higher in sulfur and aromatics content than have traditional operations. In the face of proposed government regulations on diesel product specifications, U.S refiners are evaluating the potential shortfall in performance of the distillate hydrotreaters. Most of the present units treat mainly for mild sulfur removal and/or product stability.
