Drillable bridge plug

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6775470
This patent describes a drillable bridge plug for sealing a well casing using a setting assembly and adapted to the readily drilled out to remove the bridge plug. The bridge plug consists of: an inner mandrel having detachable means for connecting the bridge plug to the setting assembly formed at the upper end of the mandrel. The mandrel consists of a partial axial bore open to the bottom of the bridge plug, the partial bore operating as a fluid bypass passageway when the bridge plug is drilled out to provide pressure equalizing fluid communication above and below the bridge plug; upper slip means and lower slip means mounted on the mandrel and adapted to selectively engage the well casing to anchor the bridge plug; an elastomeric packing element mounted on the mandrel between the upper slip means and the lower slip means; and upper and lower compression cones mounted on the mandrel, the cones operable to deform the packing element into sealing engagement with the well casing upon setting of the bridge plug; a lock nut movably mounted on the mandrel adjacent the lower compression cone, the lock nut cooperating with ratchet threads formed on the mandrel and the lower compression cone to maintain compression of the packing element and prevent rotation o the bridge plug as the plug is drilled out; the inner mandrel including the connecting means, the upper slip means, the lower slip means and the compression cones being made of cast iron wherein the bridge plug may be drilled out of the well casing.
