Effect of. gamma. -irradiation on methanation of carbon dioxide over supported Ru catalysts

Journal Article · · J. Catal.; (United States)
In situ ..gamma..-irradiation has been found to enhance the activity of Ru/molecular sieve and Ru/alumina catalysts for the CO/sub 2/ methanation reaction in the temperature range 400 to 600 K. The extent of radiation enhancement in catalytic activity was inversely related to temperature. The activation energy for the formation of CH/sub 4/ from 2% CO/sub 2/ in H/sub 2/ was reduced in the presence of radiation from 13.8 to 7.7 kcal mole/sup -1/ for Ru/alumina and from 7.3 to 4.2 kcal mole/sup -1/ for Ru/molecular sieve. The results indicate that ..gamma..-irradiation gives rise to energy storage in support materials. It is suggested that the energy released on thermal stimulation weakens the metal-CO/sub 2/ bonds resulting in an accelerated rate of reduction of CO/sub 2/ to active carbon and its subsequent methanation.
