Title: An overview of operations at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant

Conference · · Transactions of the American Nuclear Society; (USA)
OSTI ID:6775334

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a research and development project of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) that is designed for storage of contact-handled (CH) and remotely handled (RH) transuranic (TRU) waste generated by U.S. defense activities. The WIPP major facility construction is complete, as are major preoperational audits, checkouts, and demonstrations. During the initial 5-yr WIPP pilot phase, CH and RH TRU waste will be stored in a fully retrievable mode. In the next phase, involving full-scale operations, TRU waste will be emplaced in a permanent disposal configuration. Several major institutional issues will require resolution prior to the commencement of the initial pilot plant phase. WIPP mission, objectives, management and accomplishments are presented. Unresolved issues regarding initiation of the WIPP disposal phase are also discussed.
