Management of inactive uranium mill tailings
This task committee report to the members of ASCE reviews the status of inactive uranium mills that are being stabilized by the U.S. Department of Energy through the Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Project. These tailings at 25 locations in the United States remain from the development of nuclear weapons by the Manhattan Engineer District, U.S. Army, and the Atomic Energy Commission. Standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency require long-term stability-for a minimum of 200 years and for 1,000 years where possible. Other participants assisting in the project include the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the states and Indian tribes affected. Remedial action is in progress to bury these low-level wastes at the original milling sites or suitable disposal sites and is scheduled to be completed by March 1990. Outstanding issues, conclusions, and recommendations are presented.
