Superinsulation's robust future

Journal Article · · Public Power; (United States)

A superinsulated house includes the following features: an air/moisture barrier to reduce air movement through walls; controlled air exchange; and cost-effective insulating levels. The economics and technology are discussed for superinsulation. Superinsulated houses have rather flat power demand curves, so could be used in load management planning of electric utilities. It is estimated that investment in superinsulated houses could be accomplished for about 50 to 60% of the cost of new generating capacity. A study is underway to evaluate this feasibility. Even though many issues are yet to be resolved, the future of superinsulation appears robust.
