High-temperature ceramic recuperator and combustion air burner programs. Semi-annual report May-October 1982

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6771434
This document is the semiannual report on the high-temperature ceramic recuperator program and its companion program, the high-temperature preheated combustion air burner system. Since these two programs represent the two major components of an integrated system, this report summarizes the work performed on both programs. The two programs were initiated in April 1981 and will be completed by the end of 1984. A previous report summarizes the first year effort; this report summarizes the results obtained from May 1982 through October 1982. AiResearch is prime contractor to GRI on both the ceramic recuperator and the high-temperature burner program. However, AiResearch has subcontracted the high-temperature burner development to the North American Manufacturing Company of Cleveland, Ohio. The objectives of these programs are to design, develop, fabricate, field-test, and establish the commercial feasibility of an advanced, high-temperature ceramic recuperator and a high-temperature combustion air burner for application in an air preheat energy recovery system. The system will employ gas-to-gas ceramic recuperators that can operate in typical industrial flue gas streams in the 1900 to 2500F range. The burner will be capable of operating with combustion air preheat temperatures of up to 2000F with either natural gas or Number 2 fuel oil. Such a system offers the potential for fuel savings in excess of 50 percent.
