World's LP-gas supply to skyrocket

Purvin and Gertz Inc.'s M. P. Skillern and Helge Ringdal Inc.'s T. B. Aarsten predict that (1) exportable LP-gas supplies will soar from 1976's estimated 175 million bbl (14.6 million metric tons) to more than 625 million bbl (52 million metric tons) in 1985, and (2) the current surplus of LP-gas carriers will disappear by 1979 to 1980, with the Middle East unlikely to provide its own LP-gas tankers. Nearly all the increase in exportable LP-gas supplies will center in the Middle East. Of the total Middle East supply (500 million bbl or 41.7 million metric tons), Saudi Arabia will produce more than half (265 million bbl or 22 million metric tons), with Iran a distant second (91 million bbl or 7.6 million metric tons). The Western Hemisphere, with the exception of Venezuela, will consume most of its LP-gas production domestically. Most production from the northern North Sea will go to northern European markets, with some surplus possibly exported to the U.S. Australia could be an important factor in world supply if the government allows exportation instead of conversion into gasoline.
