The effect of small addition of Ni or Nb on magnetic properties of the amorphous Fe[sub 83]Zr[sub 7]B[sub 10] alloy was investigated, which was considered to have a potential for high-frequency core applications owing to its high effective permeability of more than 2[times]10[sup 4] and low coercive field. The addition of Ni or Nb of approximately 0.5--1.0 at.% was found to be effective in increasing the effective permeability in the 10 kHz--1 MHz range and in reducing the saturation magnetostriction and magnetic core loss at frequencies up to 100 kHz. The improvement of the high-frequency soft magnetic properties in Fe-Zr-B-(Ni or Nb) quaternary alloys were attributed to the low magnetostriction and the reduced magnetic domain width.
