Impact of the Iranian shortfall in the USA

Journal Article · · Energy Policy; (United States)
The chaotic reaction in the USA to curtailed exports of crude oil from Iran following the downfall of the Shah exposed the vulnerability of the distribution system to shifts in production. Although US dependence on Iranian supply was not large, domestic refining and production activity was highly correlated with imports from that country. The integrated nature of the international petroleum industry, together with minimum inventories and subsequent conservative refinery runs, brought the shortfall, unexpectedly, to some regions like the west coast. Though active in the ensuing gasoline crisis, the oil companies and the Federal government were unable to deal with the emergency effectively. 2 tables.
