How the six cleanest US longwalls stay in compliance

The US Bureau of Mines and MSHA carried out dust surveys on 6 longwall faces worked by double-drum shearers. Each of the mines selected had a record of compliance with airborne dust regulations and the purpose of the project was to identify the most effective dust control techniques. Three major techniques were identified: (1) a cutting sequence such that shearer operators work most of the time on the intake air side of the lead drum; (2) a passive barrier/external water spray system that directs airborne dust downwind and away from the operators; (3) large quantities of water through the sprays.
