Effective longwall mining at Eastern Associated Coal

Eastern Associated Coal Corp was the first US company to use a longwall mining system, in 1951. Today, it accounts for half of the company's underground production, with 9 longwall faces operating in 15 mines. A face at Harris No. 2 mine is described. The shields, face conveyor and stage loader were made in West Germany, and the double-ended ranging drum shearer in France.
