Ultraviolet absorption and photodissociation of As[sub 4]

Ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy has been used to measure the photodissociative absorption band of As[sub 4] in the spectral range from 190 to 370 nm. The As[sub 4] absorption bands are assigned to [sup 1][ital A][sub 1][r arrow][sup 1][ital T][sub 1][sup [ital A],[ital B]] Rydberg transitions with measured cross sections of 7.8[plus minus]0.5[times]10[sup [minus]18] cm[sup 2] at 256.7 nm and 1.4[plus minus]0.1[times]10[sup [minus]17] cm[sup 2] at 193.7 nm. Photolysis of As[sub 4] is shown to yield a large As[sub 2]/As[sub 4] ratio at modest photon intensities, thus suggesting a viable nonthermal method for generation of arsenic dimers for epitaxy of III-V materials.
