Collaboration between the health-effects, life-sciences, and energy-biosciences research programs of the Department of Energy

At the request of Martha Krebs, director of the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Energy Research (OER), the Board on Biology has examined opportunities for useful scientific interaction between the research programs of the Office of Health and Environmental Research (OHER) and the Office of Basic Energy Sciences (OBES) within OER. Dr. Krebs stated that she placed a high priority on the fullest possible use of DOE`s various resources and capabilities and that one way to realize that goal is to explore new opportunities for collaboration, both between programs in the office of Energy Research and throughout DOE. The board recognized that fulfilling its task would require discussion of the strengths and importance of DOE`s biological research activities and a consideration of the benefits and disadvantages of managing the OHER and OBES programs separately versus under one office. Some examples of areas for cooperative projects discussed by the board were plant genomic sciences, bioremediation, and materials. The board recommended the formation of an ad hoc joint advisory board for the biological sciences that would help with the integration of programs and help the DOE to identify the most productive subjects for research. The board suggested that opportunities exist for enhanced, productive scientific collaboration between these offices but at the risk of sacrificing some current strengths.
