Reaction of [sup t]BuCH[sub 2]CH(BCl[sub 2])[sub 2] with LiC[sub 6]F[sub 5] yields the binuclear organo-Lewis acid [sup t]BuCH[sub 2]CH-[B(C[sub 6]F[sub 5])[sub 2]][sub 2], which can be converted with KEt[sub 3]RH, followed by metathesis, into the salt [HN[sup n]Bu[sub 3]][sup 1][[sup t]BuCH[sub 2]CH[B(C[sub 6]F[sub 5])[sub 2]] [sub 2]H][sup [minus]]. Reaction of this salt with Cp[prime]2Th(CH[sub 3])[sub 2] (Cp[prime] = [eta][sup 5]-Me[sub 5]C[sub 5]) yields the cationic metallocene complex Cp[prime][sub 2]ThCH[sub 3][sup +][[sup t]BuCh[sub 2]CH[B(C[sub 6]F[sub 5]]) [sub 2]H][sup [minus]], which is a highly active catalyst for ethylene polymerization and 1-hexene hydrogenation. The THF adduct, Cp[prime][sub 2]Th(CH[sub 3])THF[sup +][[sup t]BuCH[sub 2]CH[B(C[sub 6]F[sub 5]) [sub 2]][sub 2]][sup [minus]], has been characterized by X-ray diffraction. 21 refs., 1 fig.
