Phillips Petroleum Co., as operator of the East Vacuum unit, is now in the midst of the biggest waterflood project it has undertaken in the last 10 yr in the Permian basin. This project is the last major flood of the Grayburg-San Andres interval in the Vacuum field. Mobil Oil Corp. initiated waterflooding in 1958 on the Bridges-State lease portion of the field. When the East Vacuum unit and the small section 35 cooperative waterflood (now proposed) are developed, over 98% of the vacuum Grayburg-San Andres field will be under waterflood. The East Vacuum unit is the largest in the Vacuum field which is New Mexico's largest oilfield. The field had cumulative production of 334.5 million bbl through Dec. 31, 1979, from 3 major pay zones and a number of smaller pools. The project calls for the drilling of 125 new wells on the roughly 7000 acres of the unit's area.
