Rational use of scarce chemical feedstocks

Conference · · 71st AIChE Annu. Meet.; (United States)

According to Union Carbide Corp., the major immediate opportunity for switching to alternative energy sources lies in heat and power fuel applications, which use Vertical Bar3: 60Vertical Bar3< of the oil and gas consumed in the U.S. The short-term changes in transportation, which consumes Vertical Bar3: 30Vertical Bar3< of the total U.S. oil, will involve fuel conservation rather than a shift to synthetic, e.g., coal-based, fuels. The raw material use, which accounts for only 8Vertical Bar3< of current U.S. oil and gas analysis of the conditions, likely timing, and consequences of a massive switch to potential alternative feedstocks for petrochemicals, singles out coal-derived synthesis gas and biomass as the most important future sources, especially for the production of ammonia and oxygenated aliphatics. Over-all, however, not more than 10-15Vertical Bar3< of industry's petrochemical feedstock needs are likely to be satisfied by coal- or biomass-derived products by the end of this century.
