A review of techniques available for separation of oil from water showed that equipment should be selected with a view to the specific problem, and the oily wastewaters should be preconcentrated as much as possible. The review also covers: flotation; centrifugal separation; emulsion breaking by chemical, electrical and physical methods; filter coalescence using a fibrous cartridge; biological treatment using a microbial surface to adsorb oil; carbon adsorption; and membrane filtration.
