Breakup instability of a spiral density wave in a disk of stars

The nonlinear interaction of spiral density waves in a flat galaxy modeled by a thin disk of stars is considered. The possible resonance interaction of triads of waves is analyzed. An expression is obtained for the growth rate of the nonlinear instability of a moderate-amplitude wave. For the galactic spiral structure in the solar neighborhood, such instability would develop within a few rotation periods.
