Extraction of tetravalent berkelium, Bk(IV), with neutral organophosphorus compounds from HNO/sub 3/, HCl, and H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ solutions as well as the effect of the concentration of the acids and extractants, the nature of the solvents, and other factors on the Bk(IV) distribution coefficients was studied. It was shown that tributyl phosphate (TBP), trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO), and triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO) extract Bk(IV) quantitatively under specific conditions. The optimal medium for effective Bk(IV) extraction with neutral organophosphorus compounds are HNO/sub 3/ solutions. TOPO is the best among all the extractants studied. The acid concentration range in which berkelium extraction is quantitative is wider for TOPO than for TBP and TPPO in all organic solvents. The mechanism of Bk(IV) extraction with neutral organophosphorus compounds from NHO/sub 3/ solutions was studied. It was established that Bk(IV) can be extracted with TBP, TOPO, and TPPO as the berkelium tetranitrate disolvate Bk(NO/sub 3/)/sub 4/ x 2S, where S stands for TBP, TOPO, and TPPO.
