We discuss the mechanism of backscattering of pions by /sup 3/He nuclei in the energy region approx.1 GeV where formation of real, heavy mesons (h, p, w, etc.) in the intermediate state is possible. We have calculated the contribution to the amplitude and cross section of the process from the Feynman diagram containing the amplitude for scattering of an h meson by a nucleon. The backscattering cross section (approx.0.92 mb) has a resonance nature in the region k/sub c.m.s./ = 563 MeV/c. The half-width of the resonance is of the order 64 MeV and is determined by the /sup 3/He wave function. The possibility of determining the amplitudes for scattering of w and p mesons by nucleons is discussed.
