An anaerobic digester that converts animal waste into methane has been demonstrated as a practical alternative energy source to Texas farms and ranches. Fresh manures from between 10,000 and 30,000 pounds of hogs and from 3000 chickens is used in the digester. The design of the digester is presented. The digester produces an average of 7500 cubic feet of biogas per day, which is used to power a 36,000-Btu gas-fired water chiller that cools the poultry house. Biogas could also be used for direct heating or to power an electrical generator. A wind energy conversion system is also discussed that produces electricity from wind power. A large WECS is in operation on the Tarleton State University farm in order to evaluate the WECS reliability, cost effectiveness, and practicality, and to increase public awareness of alternative energy systems. The system has a rated power output of 25 kW in a 26 mile-per-hour wind.
