The instabilities in a nonequilibrium Ar--Cs plasma are investigated experimentally in a quasistationary induction rf discharge with the average charge state of the ionized seed material is close to unity. The experiments are performed at argon pressures of 10, 40, and 60 torr, a cesium density of 10/sup 13/--10/sup 15/ cm/sup -3/, and magnetic fields up to 20 kOe. The oscillation characteristics measured: growth rate, threshold, frequency, phase velocity, and topology of the inhomogeneities: indicate that ionization disturbances develop in the region < or approx. =0.95, and superheating instabilities dominate for >0.95. The relationship between the generation of these instabilities and the decrease in the plasma conductivity and effective Hall parameter is shown.
