Haulage fatalities, underground coal, 1990--1996

This publication highlights haulage fatalities that occurred at underground coal operations from January 1990 through December 1996. The haulage fatalities included in this report involve all fatalities classified by the Mine Safety and Health Administration as ``haulage/powered haulage``. These statistics do not include haulage fatalities at surface areas of underground operations. The materials in this publication include illustrated summaries of all chargeable underground coal mining haulage fatalities accompanied by 35 mm slides and a statistical analysis of the accidents. From 1990 to 1996 there were 223 fatalities for all accident classifications at underground coal operations. Of the 223 fatalities, 44 were classified as underground coal haulage, accounting for 19.7 percent of the underground fatalities for the period.
