Means of determining extrusion temperatures

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6761021
An extrusion process consists of fabricating a metal billet, heating the billet at a selected temperature to increase its plasticity and forcing the heated billet through a small orifice to produce a desired extruded object. The improvement comprising the steps of inserting a plurality of small metallic thermal tabs at different cross sectional depths in the billet as a part of the fabricating step, and examining the extruded object at each thermal tab location for determining the crystal structure at each extruded thermal tab revealing the maximum temperature reached during extrusion in each tab of the extruded object. The thermal profile of the extruded object during extrusion may be determined.
