Secondary recovery of oil from a subterranean formation

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6760271
In a method of recovering oil by a miscible phase displacement technique, the flood efficiency is improved by the use of carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is injected into a well to drive oil ahead of it. This forms a first transition zone in which part of the carbon dioxide is mixed with the oil, this mixture being followed by carbon dioxide. A hydrocarbon is injected into the well behind and into contact with the carbon dioxide to form a second transition zone. Enough pressure on the hydrocarbon is maintained to keep it liquid in the reservoir. A driving fluid is then injected into the well to displace oil in the 2 transition zones and the liquefied hydrocarbon toward a production well from which the oil is recovered. The carbon dioxide may be injected as a liquid. (5 claims)
