New age of sail has diesel aboard

The cargo ship of the future will be a motor-sailer - a hull much the same as today's equipped with conventional screw propulsion (slightly underpowered by current standards) and rigged with ''wing'' sails to capture energy from favorable winds. It will use from 18 to 25 percent less fuel than a conventional ship on a typical North Atlantic crossing while carrying the same cargo and making the same voyage speed. If half the world cargo fleet were thus equipped for sail-assisted propulsion, annual savings would be 70 million barrels of oil.
