Damage limited pulsewidth of a passive Q-switched ruby oscillator

Passive Q-switched laser pulse parameters are studied. An approximate formula describing light pulse duration is presented. It is shown that the shortest pulse generated via classical passive Q-switching is determined by the damage threshold of laser active material. The ruby laser Q-switched by DDI* is analyzed quantitatively. Results are compared with the experiment.
