The influence of base isolation on the seismic response of light secondary equipment

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6756672
The seismic response of light secondary systems such as pumps, valves, control devices, and piping systems in a power plant is produced by the response of the primary structural system to the seismic ground motion with the result that very high accelerations can be induced in such secondary systems. This response can be reduced through the use of base isolation. Aseismic base isolation, a design strategy founded on the premise that a building can be decoupled from the damaging horizontal components of seismic ground motion, can be applied not only to attenuate the response of the primary structural system but to limit the response of secondary systems. The benefits of base isolation apply equally to existing structures required to be strengthened against seismic attack.
