Chilled water in Hartford

Conference · · Proc. Int. Dist. Heat. Assoc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6756118
Hartford, Connecticut incorporated the concept of central heating and cooling into its overall redevelopment plan in the early 1960s. The plant and its associated distribution system has expanded to encompass other major development projects, including a 15,000 seat coliseum and a million square foot retail shopping mall. The Hartford Steam Company now services 28 buildings with steam and 30 buildings with chilled water. It burns both natural gas (on an interruptible basis) and No. 6 fuel oil. The author describes the thermal cycle of six production chillers, plant and customer operations, and the company's plans to apply various thermal storage techniques as a means to increase capacity and reduce production costs. 15 figures, 2 tables.
