The Information Superhighway, is an emerging nationwide linkage of networks that use advanced telecommunications technology to deliver interactive, two-way consumer services and entertainment, primarily to residences, small business, and schools. Cable TV, telephone companies, media firms, computer related companies, and electric companies are all competing to develop information systems. In general, electric utilities are pursuing one of three roles: network provider, energy service provider, or combination provider. Many analysts believe electric utilities have a natural economic advantage over telecommunications companies, since utilities have the largest existing infrastructure for providing services to business and consumers. The future is not clear though, with many projects dependent upon regulatory approval.
