Title: Contact angles and the equilibrium spreading pressures of liquids on hydrophobic solids

Journal Article · · J. Colloid Interface Sci.; (United States)

The classical concept that spreading on either liquid 1 on a solid or liquid substrate 2 usually involves duplex films has been confirmed for hydrocarbons spreading on either liquid or solids. The adsorption of water onto hydrophobic polymer powder (teflon) is shown to occur only at hydrophilic sites, and not at all on the polymer surface. Contact angles of hydrophobic liquids (such as methylene iodide) on hydrophobic polymer surfaces are shown to be independent of the presence of hydrophilic impurities at levels which appreciably reduce the contact angles of hydrophilic liquids such as water. 25 references.
