Determination of radionuclides in drinking water by gamma spectrometry: an interlaboratory collaborative study

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6751198
Four reference samples, containing three or all four gamma emitters, /sup 60/Co, /sup 106/Ru, /sup 134/Cs, and /sup 137/Cs, from 6 to 400 pCi/L, were prepared and analytical results from 32 participating laboratories evaluated. Coefficients of variation for repeatability (within-laboratory precision), reproducibility (the combined within- and between-laboratory precision), and accuracy were determined. Results were evaluated at concentrations from twice to one tenth the maximum contaminant levels for /sup 60/Co (100 pCi/L), /sup 106/Ru (30 pCi/L), /sup 134/Cs (80 pCi/L), and /sup 137/Cs (200 pCi/L). Coefficients of variation were higher for the lower concentration samples. Ranges of the coefficients of variation for repeatability, reproducibility, and accuracy over the concentrations studied were, respectively, 3 to 12, 6 to 23, and 100 to 119% for /sup 60/Co; 19 to 27, 28 to 49, and 101 to 182% for /sup 106/Ru; 5 to 30, 9 to 30, and 92 to 99% for /sup 134/Cs; and 2 to 10, 5 to 10, and 6 to 14% for /sup 137/Cs. Larger errors were observed for /sup 106/Ru. A negative bias of about 10% was observed for /sup 134/Cs. Average lower levels of detection were estimated for /sup 60/Co, /sup 106/Ru, /sup 134/Cs, and /sup 137/Cs to be 7 pCi/L, 44 pCi/L, 8 pCi/L, and 7 pCi/L, respectively.
