Empirical renormalization of the one-body Gamow-Teller. beta. -decay matrix elements in the 1s-0d shell

..cap alpha..-decay data from nuclei with 17 < or = A < or = 39 are analyzed with full sd-space shell-model wave functions to determine the effective values of the single-particle matrix elements of the Gamow-Teller operator between all combinations of sd-shell orbitals.
