An international conference on air quality and aviation sponsored by the U. S. Federal Aviation Administration in cooperation with the U.S. Air Force, the Air Pollution Control Association, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, was held at Reston, Va., (10/16-18/78) with 24 papers given in sessions on Air Quality and Emission Standards...General, Airport Sources and Emissions Data Base, and Air Quality Modeling and Case Studies, along with a panel discussion titled ''Where do we go from here.''. Some main points of the technical findings are that aircraft can not be considered in isolation as a source of hydrocarbons; general aviation aircraft are minor sources of carbon monoxide; NO/sub x/, emitted as nitric oxide (NO) along the runway, is a local problem whose severity is probably affected by the ozone levels in the airport vicinity; and particle emissions cause only visibility problems around airports.
