Recent advances in the experimental and analytical characterization of dynamic material failure are examined in reviews and reports. Topics discussed include the fracture and damage tolerance of composites, dynamic structural failure, dynamic fracture, and blast and mechanical shock testing. Consideration is given to a zero-K(II) criterion for a smoothly curving crack, impact damage analysis by differential IR thermography, the measurement of crack-initiation toughness in steel at high loading rates, testing large aircraft structures, damage tolerance of a composite multirib wing box, and experimental methods for metal-matrix and ceramic-matrix composites.
