Abstract

Microspheres for nuclear waste storage are formed by gelling droplets containing the waste in a gelation fluid, transferring the gelled droplets to a furnace without the washing step previously used, and heating the unwashed gelled droplets in the furnace under temperature or humidity conditions that result in a substantially linear rate of removal of volatile components therefrom. Fuel particles were also produced using this method.

Internal gelation sol-gel methods have used a variety of sphere forming methods in the past to produce metal oxide microspheres, but typically with poor control over the size uniformity at diameters near 100 µm. This work describes efforts to make and measure internal gelation, sol-gel microspheres with very uniform diameters in the 100 – 200 µm size range using a two-fluid nozzle. Pressurized water treatments were investigated as a means to prevent cracking of internal gelation sol-gel microspheres upon drying and heating. A batch of gelled cerium oxide microspheres was prepared, split into two samples that were processed with and without a pressurized water treatment, and dried in air at room temperature. Thermal gravimetric analysis was used to compare the mass loss profiles between the two samples and to understand volatile emissions from cerium oxide microspheres during heat treatments up to 600 °C. Thermal analysis of SYNROC gel microspheres

Thermoanalytical methods were used to characterize SYNROC microspheres at three stages of the internal gelation process: unwashed spheres, washed spheres, and washed-and-dried spheres. Linear-programmed heating experiments were performed using thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, differential thermal analysis, and mass spectrometry for producing the thermograms. The data were used to elucidate thermal reactions occurring between ambient and 800/sup 0/C. The principal reactions were the release of waters from various sources, the decomposition and combustion of gelation additives (hexamethylenetetramine and urea), and the decomposition of carbonates.
