Apparatus for odorizing liquid natural gas

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6749052
San Diego Gas and Electric Co. and Dual Fuel Systems, Inc.'s new method odorizes LNG with an odorant in discrete volumes as the LNG is being transferred from a bulk storage vessel to a tanker or the like. The odorant-diluent solution, preferably thiophene-propane (20 parts propane to 1 part thiopene) is introduced into an injection vessel of a predetermined volume. High-pressure gas at a pressure above the diluent's vapor pressure forces the odorant and diluent through a heat exchanger and into the LNG. In the heat exchanger, the odorant-diluent mixture is cooled to a predetermined level by LNG boil-off from the bulk storage vessel. This procedure is repeated as many times as necessary to odorize the quantity of natural gas being taken from the bulk storage vessel.
