A measurement is made of the 3[ital d]-4[ital f] transition energies in the Ni-like ions Re[sup 47+], Ir[sup 49+], Pt[sup 50+], Au[sup 51+], and Bi[sup 55+] and the 2[ital p]-4[ital d] transition energies in the Ne-like ions Br[sup 25+], Kr[sup 26+], Rb[sup 27+], and Y[sup 29+] using the Livermore electron-beam ion trap. The ions studied are candidates for an x-ray laser scheme based on resonant photopumping which predicts lasing among the 3[ital p]-3[ital s] transitions in a Ne-like ion. The results of the measurements are compared to multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock calculations and systematic differences are found. The best resonance is found for the Pt-Rb pair at 2512 eV, whose energies differ by 0.4[plus minus]0.1 eV, that is, by only 160 ppm.
