In April 1974 Vereinigte Elektrizitatswerke Westfalen (VEW) headquartered in Dortmund W. Germany commissioned the last of four 400-MW combined cycle sets at their Gersteinwerk station near Stockum in the industrial Ruhr area of the country. A description is given of this combined cycle facility which has a current installed generating capacity around 4,000 MW consisting of nuclear, conventional steam, peaking gas turbine and combined cycle plant. The most striking differences are relative size of the gas and steam turbine equipment and the operational role of the gas turbine.
