Production of iron sponge from iron ore

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6747293
This patent provides a method of reducing sponge iron ore. The process consists of reacting a solid carbonaceous fuel with a gas containing at least 85% oxygen at temperatures suitable for the reduction of sponge iron ore to produce a reducing gas containing at least 70% by volume carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The preponderant proportion of said reducing gas is carbon monoxide, which is cooled with said reducing gas to about 1000/sup 0/C, contacting said reducing gas with said sponge iron ore in an amount sufficient to reduce said iron ore to at least 85% metallic iron. The process continues to produce a spent reducing gas containing carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide, and while removing carbon dioxide from said spent reducing gas.
