Process of making combustible gas

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6746918
This patent describes a method of making combustible gas by air blasting an ignited fuel bed with air to bring it to incandescence, discontinuing said air blasting, and separately introducing a hydrocarbon into a stream of superheated steam. This causes said steam and hydrocarbon to become thoroughly mixed and simultaneously heated to a temperature above 1000/sup 0/F. The heated gaseous product is then introduced into the incandescent fuel bed from above while the resulting gas is removed from beneath. The gas generated has a hydrogen to carbon monoxide ratio from about two to one to three and one-half to one, and is substantially free from suspended carbon resulting from pyrolysis of said hydrocarbons.
