An investigation was performed to evaluate the perceptual aspects of safety parameter display systems (SPDSs) in nuclear power plant control rooms. Three SPDS configurations (star, bars, and meters) were evaluated in a series of four experiments. Subjects for the investigation were qualified nuclear plant operators and engineers at EG and G Idaho, Inc., at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory. The techniques reported herein were demonstrated to be sensitive to differences in human performance which result from using different display formats to present the same safety parameter information.
