The magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium problem in a toroidal--helical configuration is reformulated by a renormalization of the unperturbed cylindrically symmetric equilibrium state by using the average of the helical perturbation. To the first order in toroidal effect, a general differential equation for the toroidal displacement is derived, which reduces to the tokamak result in the weak helical field limit and to the stellerator result in the weak plasma current limit.
