This patent describes a marine seismic streamer system. It comprises: a marine seismic streamer; a vessel for towing the streamer through a body of water; at least one streamer recovery unit connected into the streamer, the unit comprising: a housing; a source of compressed gas positioned in the housing and having an outlet; a valve for closing and opening the outlet; an inflatable, flotation device stored in the housing; means for connecting the valve to the flotation device; means aboard the vessel for generating a trigger depth signal which is representative of the depth at which the flotation device is to be inflated; means in the housing for continuously receiving and storing the trigger depth signal through the streamer; means for continuously measuring the operating depth of the streamer; and means for opening the valve when the operating depth equals or exceeds the depth represented by the last received and stored trigger depth signal.
