Fabrication of low density urania--thoria fuel pellets (LWBR Development Program)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6743215
Low-density seed-size (< 0.250-inch diameter) UO/sub 2/-ThO/sub 2/ pellets were fabricated utilizing assocated volatile additives. Dextrose D-16 sugar (size -140/+200 mesh) produced acceptable porosity characteristics. Reducing the binder content reduced the amount of microcracking and elongated intergranular porosity. Micronizing subsequent to centrifuging also significantly reduced the amount of this porosity in ball-milled, acid-leached powder. Dextrose additions to produce 80, 85, and 90% of theoretical density sintered pellets with high-density matrices were determined. (NSA 22: 41088)
