Volume 3, Parts 1 and 2, is part of a 9-volume study performed to investigate the behavior and suitability of an aquifer-based compressed air energy storage (CAES) facility. The study was jointly sponsored by the US Department of Energy and Electric Power Research Institute. Volume 3 covers the site selection study aspects of the project. Aquifer sites in the Illinois and Indiana portions of the Illinois Basin were identified and ranked. A site was selected from the four top-ranked sites and was then utilized in other project work as the host site for the preliminary design of a compressed air energy storage facility.
