Potassium beta/double prime/-alumina membranes

Journal Article · · J. Am. Ceram. Soc.; (United States)
Although single-crystal beta- and beta/double prime/-aluminas can be ion-exchanged by immersion in molten nitrates, polycrystalline membranes of Na-/beta/sub d/double prime/-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ fracture on contact with molten KNO/sub 3/. A KCl vapor ion-exchange process allows synthesis of leaktight potassium-ion-conducting /beta/sub d/double prime/-AlO/sub 3/ membranes. Material properties, including results of electrical tests with molten potassium electrodes, are reported for a 12.65% K/sub 2/O 0.7% Li/sub 2/O, 86.65% Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ composition. Low-resistivity polycrystalline K-/beta/sub d/double prime/-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ may be an alternative to the Na-/beta/sub d/double prime/-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ ion-conducting membrane for secondary batteries. 14 refs.
