Electromagnetic spallation of 6. 4-TeV /sup 32/S nuclei

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)
We have studied the fragmentation of 6.4-TeV /sup 32/S nuclei in Pb, Cu, and Al targets. For Pb, the electromagnetic spallation cross sections are larger than the nuclear cross sections. For Pb and Cu the electromagnetic spallation cross sections decrease with projectile charge loss ..delta..Z as approx.exp(-0.6..delta..Z) and show a dependence on target charge consistent with approx.Z/sub T//sup 1.8/ as predicted by theory.
